Do you remember when I asked if you’d like help learning how to do a butterfly? 🦋 Well here ya go! There are more exercises and perquisites to doing a butterfly and these are two exercises I like to begin the butterfly learning process 🙌 — 🎥 @ameliaskating 🎵 Dance Monkey by Tones and I —⠀ WHAT ——— Exercise: Introduction to butterfly Skill Type: Off-ice Difficulty: Intermediate + WHY ——— Breakdown key phase of the butterfly Strengthen and prepare the body HOW ——— 1️⃣ Upper body sweep This exercise help reinforce, improve range, and strengthen the entry and takeoff phase of the butterfly. It’s important to keep your legs straight as you sweep the body from side to side. Try and get your chest parallel to the floor at the bottom of the sweep. Allow the arms to scissor during the sweeping action. I prefer to keep the head up during the sweep, but it can also be performed looking down. Ultimately, this is a style choice ❤️ 2️⃣ Single leg butterfly kick This exercise helps reinforce the leg action during the butterfly and improve control, range, and strength of the leg kick. The goal is to keep the body square and parallel to the floor as the leg extends (leg staying straight ) and kicks directly behind you. If you’re kicking the right leg extend the right arm forward in opposition to the leg. After the kick, bring the leg to your center, pause, and repeat the kick. You can touch down here to help you balance. This exercise must be performed on both feet.
