Yesterday was a very special day! We were able to bring Amelia to her first race of mine and couldn’t have been more of a race morning distraction I needed as well as motivation at the start and half way point. 2020 absolutely crushed any sort of race for me as it did all competitors. I kept up with a solid training plan and was told about the Tecumseh Trail Challenge at a @dinoseries event I did 10 weeks ago. One of the distances was a marathon and that has been a bucket list race distance of mine for the last few years. After putting together a 10-week training plan, it was all in for me. The goal was to make sure I could actually finish to check off the race distance. I did one better and placed in my AG at 3rd place and 9th overall. Did not expect that and was not training for that reason. The time commitment for a marathon training block is extensive and takes a village especially when you throw a 8-month old in the equation. Huge!!! Thanks to my wife @amandasueiu as she let me press on while we stayed very flexible in schedules. Ich habe so schöne Erinnerungen an den letzten @frankfurtmarathon im vergangenen Jahr. 😍 Heute wäre es wieder soweit gewesen. Aber leider gab es heute keinen Marathon für mich. Dafür bin ich mit meinem Freund @the .sartip zu einen Tempodauerlauf in die Berge gestartet. Vor einem Jahr am Start beim @frankfurtmarathon . Hoffentlich wird es bald mal wieder möglich sein an einer Startlinie zusammen mit vielen Läufern zu stehen. Ich liebe das Gefühl aus Anspannung, in sich gehen und Vorfreude - das Warten auf den Startschuss und das Kreisen vom Hubschrauber über der Stadt. Een ontspannen 5,5 km gelopen in het sfeervolle herfstweer. Incl. loopneus en traanogen 😂(wel opgepast, want met de bladeren op de paden was het glad! ) Bren mee op de fiets! 😊 Toch doe ik altijd wel muziek aan aan. Al is het zachtjes. Ondanks het mindful lopen en meditatie oefeningen van @sportrusten .nl kan ik er nog steeds niet goed tegen om m’n eigen ademhaling te horen als ik loop 😬 Als ik een vlot tempo wil lopen doe ik vaak muziek aan met een snelle beat. En bij een rustig tempo, zoals vandaag, loop ik heerlijk op klassieke muziek. Ben ik de enige met zulke verschillende playlists? 🙈

HOW TO PR *WITHOUT* IMPROVING YOUR FITNESS⚡️ . How do you handle the middle miles of a race/workout? These can end up being lost miles or intervals when we start in the beginning- potentially too fast, start struggling in the middle, & then try to rally to finish strong. Does this sound familiar to anyone but me?!🌚🤦🏻‍♀️Haha. . I would basically surrender these miles as the casualties of my irrational exuberance starting out. Welp, if you want to underperform at races, that’s the attitude to have towards the middle portions of a race. HAHA. I had to take back those miles & learn how to execute them. . 👉🏽I started by ACTUALLY pacing myself well. Not a total *fly & die* move- but smart pacing where I started at what felt relaxed (knowing that towards the middle miles ) it’s not feeling so ez breezy. . 👉🏽Then when those middle miles came & I felt like I was fatiguing, I would start pushing. I used to think that if I started “pushing” in the middle miles, I would have nothing left for the end. But that’s NOT right. That’s underestimating ourselves. We train so that we can fight from beginning to end. Not to completely give up in the middle & try to show up with some fight in the last miles. . In those middle miles— . ⚡️I would wake myself back up. Earth to Kimberly, now’s not the time to zone out & act like a suffering martyr.🙄Wake up, focus, & mentally get yourself in the game so you can keep on pace. . ⚡️I would reinvigorate my form. Shoulders back, good posture, relaxed body, quicken those steps, lean forward towards the finish line. . ⚡️I would fight with a little surge— quick steps, quick steps, quick steps!!! . ⚡️I would PUSH instead of just going with what pace felt natural. i.e. I would put in more effort to holding pace. . ⚡️I would turn off the part of my brain that was commiserating about how I was suffering & turn on my inner cheerleader. . . So if you’ve been letting those middle miles be the lost miles, RECLAIM THEM. That’s a simple way to improve PR’s without even improving fitness.✨Race execution is a SKILL in mental & physical control that you CAN LEARN! . I wanna hear— how do you handle those middle miles?!🗣
