VIDEO ANALYSIS: Henry J Ruggs III @ruggs_iii (4.27s ) • • • The 40 is much more than getting out fast and staying low. He ran fast because of what he did right, and I believe he could ran a little faster. Let’s break it down 📈. • • • 1️⃣. His 3pt stance is good, flat back, slightly leaning forward, and head down. His feet are in great position to initiate a push/pull. He can slightly change his shin angles in the stance but everybody bodies are different. 2️⃣. First 10 yards are covered in 1.62s... that’s fast. The reason why is his ability to quickly change his shin angles (video portion of two arrows ) which allow him to push into that acceleration faster. In addition his first two steps are behind his Center of Mass (CoM ) and he closes the gap fast by using his hips and hamstrings to snap back in the air. His head and torso are down and is balanced. He is working with gravity! 3️⃣. From 10-20yd he is still accelerating. His hips are still slightly behind which causes him to appear to look like he is stumbling. He becomes a little quad dominant, but quickly fixes it. 4️⃣. 20-40yd he enters his TOP END speed. He’s has a forward lean, this is when he starts moving. He covers his last 10 yards in 0.74s. He is efficient his his positions. 5️⃣. He’s a freak athlete. Recently on the @justflysports podcast, I detailed the primary importance of frequently varying training means, methods, and exercises. . . There are two primary factors that really drive the “quantitative” improvements (e.g you added 50lbs to your squat, or did X amount of additional reps at X weight ) we see in the weightroom. 1 ) general strength, speed, and power Improvements In the athletes motor apparatus as a whole 2 ) proficiency within the skill itself. For example, the better you get at the SKILL of squatting, the more you can lift, even if you did not technically make any significant structural or cellular changes. . . While surely these two are not completely separable, a training program that biases the former will likely have a significantly higher degree of strength to on field performance carryover. Unless you participate in powerlifting, it is Ultimately the “strength” gained FROM the primary lifts—not the proficiency of skill in the lift itself—that matters in a sporting context. . . To give a little more context, we can look at this on the opposite end of the spectrum by conversely comparing the effects of specific sport skill mastery on the general development of strength, speed, and power. For example, while honing the skill of swimming (specific ) will likely improve your ability to generate tremendous amounts of specific force within the stroking motion, it likely won’t improve your ability to throw a baseball, at least not to a significant degree. Why? Because the majority of your force effort proficiency is dependent on simply being GOOD at the SKILL of swimming. . . again, skill cannot be completely divorced from strength, and a certain degree of “comfortability” and base proficiency does need to be present and trained frequently enough to ensure progress in specific movements such as the squat, deadlift, and bench press. . . Making frequent but subtle changes in these lifts (varying stance, tempo, implements ect ) ensures a few things 1 ) Most of our improvement is NOT predicated simply on skill acquisition 2 ) We actually increase our POTENTIAL FOR higher degrees of specific skill mastery, by broadening (continued ⤵️ )
